Adios!

Well, that's it for Stereopathetic Soulmanure. I'm sad to see her go, but I'm like a proud pappy who's watching his little girl grow up and go off into the big world; this moment is definitely bittersweet.

But never fear, I'll be back on KZSC's spring schedule with a new show! Look out for Recycled Air featuring the very best electro pop sounds every Friday, from 7 to 8:30 pm!

Adios!

Requests/Suggestions?

I'm always open to new ideas. Do you have an idea for a band that I should play on SPSM? Let me know; leave a comment here, or call me/instant message me when I'm on the air!

2/18/09 and 3/3/09

I made today's set with the intention of keeping a rhythm going for as long as I could in each block of music. I think I did pretty well, despite a well-meaning EAS interruption from our good friends at the National Weather Service. Here's the playlist:

1. Bjork - Army of Me
2. Black Moth Super Rainbow - Drippy Eye (Background Music)
3. Xiu Xiu - Clowne Towne
4. Beck - Emergency Exit

23. TV on the Radio - The Wrong way
24. Excepter - The Last Dance

26. Air - Radian (Background Music)
27. My Bloody Valentine - Loomer
28. Radiohead - Like Spinning Plates (Live)
29. Sigur Ros - Dogun
30. Stereolab - Brackhage

The theme of the 18th's show was music of epic proportions. I intentionally chose songs that were 10 minutes or longer to showcase the different kinds of truly bizzare sounds that the "experimental" label encompasses - sounds that typically aren't fit for airplay and only someone in my time slot could really get away with. The Black Dice song, for instance, is 15 minutes of pure field sounds - hardly "music" at all. Here's the lineup from Feb. 18, shamelessly ripped from my playlist webpages at kzsc.org:

12:40am Manitoba “Sundialing” from Andorra CD ALBUM (Merge 2007)
12:44am Beck “Waitin On a Train” from Stereopathic Soul Manure CD ALBUM (Flipside 1994)
12:45am Boards of Canada “Sixtyten” from Music Has the Right to Children CD ALBUM (Warp 1998) — Mixed with Beck over, but then I messed up :(

4. Klaxons - It's Not Over Yet

6. Hanatarash - 77UP
This two-disc compilation coincides with last year's SFMOMA exhibit of the same name, a "listening event documenting the past 50 years of Japanese experimental music," ... Noise, of course, is a focal point, and each of the several noise pieces are quite distinct ... tracks range from minimalist-inspired rhythmic clicks, such as the Nerve Net Noise, Atau Tanaka, and Ryoji Ikeda tracks, which all manage to distinguish themselves with their detailed but disarmingly simple tonal palettes, to more abstract, juxtaposed medleys. Masahiro Miwa's contribution uses plaintive low-fi synths to establish tension; though the sounds are light and playful, the overall feel is heavy and works well with his stated topic of youth violence in Japan. I like I.d.'s supposedly "hacker"-inspired piece. Its discrete bundles of static and waves of digital noise sound almost like information, and it slowly develops into something vaguely repetitive and structured.

Show: 2/3/09 - soundscapes

This week's episode featured a lot of music that was focused more primarily on the construction of sonic landscapes as opposed to melody - this music was focused in the second hour, starting with Deerhunter's "Octet." I took a few requests this time around which was, as always, a plus. Thanks to all those who listened and called in!

1. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots pt. 2
2. Battles - Leyendecker

3. Marnie Stern - Shea Stadium
"Believe it that this is not tape manipulated music, as it sounds very close to the thrilling musical acrobatics of Stern's live performances. All of this said, there isn't a pretentious note on This Is It...; Stern may be ambitious but her songs are grounded in humor, extrapolated hooks, and fragmented pop formulas. ... Admittedly, This Is It... takes a bit of work to get through the first time, but it gets easier, resulting in a compulsive, even obsessive desire to it play again and again, ultimately leading to the assertion that "there is nothing else on the planet remotely like this!"

4. Mahjongg - Kottbusser Torr
5. Bearsuit - Tstm
6. Tunng - Clump
7. Excepter - Burger
8. Feathers - Skara Brain

9. Beck - Satan Gave Me A Taco (request)
"Essentially, [Stereopathetic Soulmanure] was both a palate cleanser, one designed to scare away the "Loser" fans, and a bid for indie credibility, since the music on Stereopathetic is equally as uncompromising and as unlistenable as Sonic Youth or their many imitators at their most extreme."

10.The Fiery Furnaces - In My Little Thatched Hut
11. Deerhoof - The Last Trumpeter Swan
12. Telepathe - Chrome's On It
13. Mice Parade - Snow
14. No Age - Every Artist Needs a Tragedy
15. Benoît Pioulard - Golden Grin
16. My Bloody Valentine - When You Sleep
17. Bjork - Cocoon
18. Deerhunter - Octet
19. Growing - Cutting, Opening, Swimming
20. Ulaan Kohl - Untitled 2 (new)
21. The Books - Smells Like Content
22. Cibo Matto - Crumbs
23. Panda Bear - Search For Delicious
24. TV on The Radio - Tonight
25. Indian Jewelry - Walking on the Water
26. Blonde Redhead - Heroine
27. Animal Collective - Taste (new)
28. Psychic Ills - Fingernail Tea (new)
29. Fuck Buttons - Ribs Out
30. AIR - How Does It Make You Feel? (request)
31. Efterklang - Mirador

Show 1/28/09: dark and droney

With this week's show I got a lot more noise/drone sound into the playlist. I was especially proud with the lineup of the first hour. I felt like the songs flowed into each other, like a river. Thanks to everyone that listened and called in. Here's the playlist:

1. Bjork - Innocence
2. Caribou - Cherrybomb
3. Alexis Gideon - Liophant
4. Mahjongg - Mercury
5. Abe Vigoda - The Garden
6. Giraffes? Giraffes! - When Catholic School Girls go camping, the nicotine vampires reign supreme
7. Experimental dental school - Drum Circuit's Lake
8. Beck - Soul Suckin Jerk
9. Cibo Matto - Beef Jerky
10. Liars - Housecloud
11. Excepter - And And Every
12. Xiu Xiu - Crank Heart
13. The Flaming Lips - Talkin bout the smiling deathporn immortality blues (Everybody wants to live forever)
14. The Microphones - Bass Drum Dream
15. Ciccone youth - Macbeth
16. Indian Jewlery - Health & wellbeing
17. Animal Collective - My Girls

18. Portishead - Machine Gun
Portishead, a band thrust into the lime light for (perhaps accidentally) pioneering the trip-hop genre, took a radical departure from the sound with their 2008 release - Third. The album perfectly captures the disorientation, alienation, and even anger, that arise from themes of loneliness, desperation and confusion in ways that use raw sound to convey actual physical reactions within you. These reactions are just a part of the song as the sound itself, such as with the pounding jackhammer percussion and high-pitched wail of this next track, machine gun.

19. TV on the Radio - Dreams
20. Goldrapp - Utopia
21. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Strange Fires
22. Can - Oh Yeah
23. Mum - Guilty Rocks
24. Rings - Is He Handsome?

25 Beirut - Venice
The high praises of Beirut's baltic-inspired indie folk, typically featuring strings and high-powered brass have been sung from the highest transmitter towers to the most esoteric of music blogs. But his newest re
lease, March of the Zapotec/Realpeople Holland, features on it's latter half Zach Condon's explorations of electronica, which he actually experimented with before he became the act known as Beirut. This next song is called Venice.

26. Menomena - E is Stable
27. Deerhunter - Strange Lights
28. Radiohead - Like Spinning Plates
29. Sonic Youth - I Love You Golden Blue
30. God Is An Astronaut - Post Mortem
31. Do Say Make Think - 107 Reasons Why

And, as always, you can see live-updated playlists for mine (or any other) show on the Great 88 at kzsc.org, under "Schedule & Playlists"
